What is a ‘Sensory code’?

About this area

This is our Spark gallery, which is two separate areas – one on the ground floor and one on the first floor.

In Spark, we have a changing programme of exhibitions and activities. We usually welcome a new exhibition every 6 months or so.

  • Explore two exhibitions called "Arboreal" and "ShapeShift"

What will you see?

Sights: High

You can expect to see

  • In ShapeShift and Arboreal, the light level is quite low with small colourful lights on lots of the exhibits

What will you hear?

Sounds: High

You can expect to hear

  • Different sound effects from the Varient Wall on the First Floor
  • In Arboreal, there is music and animal noises coming from all of the areas
  • In Arboreal, the glow worms projected onto the floor make a cute "wooooooo" noise as they come to you

What will you smell?

Smells: Low

You can expect to smell

  • General museum smells - other people, heating systems, food smells from the Café

What you can touch

Touch: Medium

You can expect to touch

  • In Arboreal, there are stomp pads on the floor to stamp your feet on and play games
  • Touch the walls of the crystal cave to create music
  • Touch the ipad screens in ShapeShift to create drawings (FlipDot) or paterns (Variant)
