What is a ‘Sensory code’?

We’ve created a sensory code to help you find out the sounds, smells, sights and things to touch around the museum.

Area 4: Desert Discovery

About this area

This is a space just for children aged under 5 to play in, with calm, low level lighting and a desert theme.

Activities you can take part in

  • Put a ball in the bucket lift and turn the crank to move it up, across the conveyor belt, to drop down the other side
  • Stack up our over-size soft building blocks
  • Stroke the coyote to make it howl

What will you see?

Sights: Low

You can expect to see

  • A baby oasis, including a soft-play palm tree
  • Lower light levels than the rest of the museum
  • A glowing, pretend campfire, that isn't hot

  • The coyote howls when you stroke its head
  • General museum noises
  • Sound of the ball conveyor belt moving
